April Reading Contest!

During the month of April 2013, coinciding with National Library Week (April 14 – 20) and National Screen Free Week (April 29 – May 5), we are hosting a Reading Contest for children of all ages.

Starting on March 26, young readers may pick up a Reading Log in the Children’s Room. The contest begins on April 1.  Readers may record the minutes they read every day. Every time he or she comes to the Library, the reader should bring the reading log so links in a paper chain can be added for every hour read.

The contest ends on Saturday, May 4 at 12 p.m.  Participants should bring in their Reading Log for tallying.  The winner in the three reading groups (Read to Me, Early Reader, Independent Reader) will receive a gift basket. For more information, call the Children’s Room at 860-536-7721, email mnlchildren@gmail.com.

Mystic Rotary Grant for Children's Books on DVD

The Rotary Club of Mystic recently granted $250.00 to the Mystic & Noank Library to purchase new Children's Books on DVD. The DVDs help develop pre-reading skills as children listen to stories and read along with the video on their television or computer screen.
The Library has over 300 children’s and teen’s books on DVD and continually updates its collection.  “We are grateful for the Rotary Club of Mystic’s ongoing support of our programs,” said Roberta Donahue, Children’s Librarian.  “Since we have been adding books to our online e-reader library, we need extra funding to continue to add to our DVD collection in the Library.”

2013 Take Your Child to the Library Day!

Saturday, February 2, 2013  10am - 5pm

The Mystic & Noank Library Children’s Room joins hundreds of libraries across the country to celebrate the second annual Take Your Child to the Library Day.  On Tuesday, February 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Library will feature games, crafts and films that encourage children to enjoy the Library, sign up for a library card, and join others for a day of fun.

This grass-roots effort was started in 2012 by Waterford, Connecticut Children’s Librarian, Nadine Lipman, and Stratford, Connecticut’s librarian, Caitlin Augusta. After only one year, over 200 libraries in 31 states (to date) are participating.

The Mystic & Noank Library will feature children’s Valentines crafts, Chess cCub at 10 a.m. (all are welcome), and a double feature movie in the Ames Room starting at 1:30 p.m.  All events are free and open to the public.
