Take Your Child to the Library Day - February 4, 2012

For the first time ever, libraries across Connecticut and the entire country are celebrating children and reading with Take Your Child to the Library Day! This grass-roots effort, started by the Waterford Public Library and Stratford Connecticut Library Association Children's Librarians, is really taking off!

Join us on Saturday, February 4 for fun activities for kids of all ages. The Chess Club (Grades 2 and up) meets from 10-11. Come try your hand for a game (or two, or three!). Enjoy some hot chocolate and goodies while you play. We'll also have crafts set up all day - help us make a Valentine paper chain for the Children's Room, and make a Valentine (or two, or three!) to take home. We have a special Movie Double Feature and we'll be showing two of our favorite movies. At 1:00 p.m., we'll be showing Dolphin Tale (PG), starring Harry Connick, Jr. and Ashley Judd. At 3:00 p.m., we'll be showing Zookeeper (PG), starring Kevin James and Adam Sandler. Enjoy some popcorn with the movie!

Teen Events

Monday, July 11 at 2:00 pm our Monday art programs for teens will begin. Come create groovy peace sign crafts.

Monday, July 18th at 2:00 we will make garlands galore. Join us and make hanging decorative garlands out of wildly, colorful paper!

Teen Marker Madness: July 25th at 2:00 pm. Bring in t-shirts, book bags, tote bags, pillow cases, you name it! We will spend the afternoon drawing on them.

Friends and jewelry. Let's combine the two. Teens can come create Friendship bracelets on Monday August 1st at 2:00 pm.Join us Monday, August 8th at 2:00pm to make Friendship bracelets.

Teen Movie; come watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 1 on July 12th at 6:30 pm. Watch this before the final movie installment of the Harry Potter series comes out!

Spring Events in the Children's Room

This month we continue with Chess Club which meets @ 10:00 am on Saturday mornings in the Children's Room.

Bring your brain power! Draw On! takes place between March 26th - April 9th. Anytime you stop in the Library during this time, you are invited to draw! On Saturday the 9th we will have an afternoon of drawing.

Attention Lego Lovers! We will be holding lego club in the Ames Room at 3 PM on the following Saturdays; April 16th, April 23rd, April 30th and May 7th.

Bedtime Stories will take place on Monday, April 11th at 6:30 pm by the upstairs fireplace.

Kid's Movie Matinee on Wednesday, April 11th at 4 PM. Stay tuned for exciting summer activities news in next month's update.

Friday, June 25th the teens will kick off the summer with a surfing movie double-feature from 12:30-4:30pm. Snacks provided.

Monday, June 28th from 1:00-4:00pm join us in the teen area for some "Make a Splash!" themed games. Feel free to bring in any water themed games you have.

Teen Tie-Dye: July 12th from 1:00-4:00pm on the library lawn. Bring in a t-shirt, socks, tote bag, pillow case, you name it!

Do you prefer sushi or candy? What if you could combine the two? Teens can come create candy sushi Monday July 19th from 1:00-4:00pm.

Join us Monday, July 26th from 1:00-4:00pm for a fail-proof watercolor project to bring home or decorate the teen area!

Are you a bibliophile? Come make some decorations from recycled books for your room or the teen area Monday, August 2nd from 1:00-4:00pm.

Teens are invited to decorate their water bottles on Monday, August 9th from 1:00-4:00pm. You bring the bottle, we bring the rest!

The weekly chess series continues meeting Saturdays at 10:00am in the children's room. Bring your brain power!

The Lego robotics program meets again Saturday May 1st in the Ames room at 3:00pm.

The annual library fair poster contest continues this year. Bring in your poster by 5:00pm, Saturday May 15th. Winning entries will be posted in the windows of Bank Square Books in downtown Mystic.
Contest rules: Posters should be no larger than 12"x 18" and include the artist's name, age, home telephone number, school and grade on the back. Please include: "Mystic & Noank Library Fair", "Saturday, June 5, 2010" and "9:30 am to 2:30 pm".
Awards in several categories and a grand prize of a $20 gift certificate to Bank Square Books will be presented at 11:30am on Saturday, June 5, 2010 as part of the fair festivities!

Bedtime stories continue Monday March 8th with storyteller Rev. Barbara Porizky. Join us this month in the activity room. We'll be back upstairs by the fireplace in April. Pajamas welcome!

Renovations on the library have begun! We will be closed to the public starting Monday March 15th and will reopen Monday March 22nd. Come in to see us all spiffed-up!

Our bedtime stories series continues February 8th. Join storyteller Rev. Barara Porizky by the upstairs fireplace at 6:30pm. Pajamas are welcome!

We've already heard from Puxatony Phil, but our weather reports show that Tuesday the 16th is going to be Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! Join us for at 4:00pm in the meeting room for this 2009 adaptation of a great children's book (rated PG). Free! Bring your own popcorn.

Have you ever wondered, "Where do the animals go when it rains?" On Saturday February 20th at 3:00pm, you can learn about where animals hide in this interactive program presented by the Denison Peqoutsepos Nature Center. Part of the One Book, Every Young Child initiative sponsored by the Libraries of Southeastern Connecticut and the Community Foundation of Southeastern Connecticut. Space is limited, registration beginning January 29th.

Spring Storytime registration begins February 22nd. Registration is by lottery as class sizes are limited. Please register in person, in the children's room or by phone during registration week. Bookmarks - Draw on a bookmark and take it home with you to use with books you have checked out at the library.
Drawing Station - Come draw and doodle all week long. Transform old catalog cards into works of art. You can take them home or exhibit them at the Mystic Art Center's one-night exhibit Draw-On, on Thursday, April 2, 6-8 pm.
Draw-On Visitor's Book - All library visitors can contribute a drawing or write down your thoughts about drawing.

By reading four books (outside of your required schools books), you may receive two ticket vouchers given to you by the Children's librarian ( All vouchers are based on availability). To win vouchers, bookmarks listing your four completed books must be received and initialed by the librarian.
